Institute for Economic Studies

The Institute conducts economic research including survey work, and collects and stores research materials pertaining to economics. The collection here is comprised mainly of 20,000 volumes donated by Professor Torajiro Takagaki (1890-1985), a leading Japanese economist who specialized in money and banking. It also includes a world-class collection of works by John Law, a Scottish economist renowned for his work in public ?nance for France in the 18th century, and pamphlets relating to the debates over gold bullion in the United Kingdom during the early 19th century. The institute invites lecturers from outside our institution to conferences and meetings, called mini-symposia, which are held several times per year. The work of the institute, including lectures, is documented in the Annual Report and in research papers.
